The Rise of Private Markets: Reshaping the Future of Asset Management

I really enjoyed presenting my research on the growth of private markets at TSAM New York.

My thanks to the organizers, for bringing together such a thoughtful group of investment professionals and creating space for a serious conversation about where asset management is headed.

The presentation explored how private markets are moving from a specialized institutional allocation toward a more central role in portfolios, wealth management, and corporate finance. The shift is significant: investors are seeking income, diversification, and access to long-term assets, while companies are increasingly turning to private lenders as traditional bank financing becomes more constrained.

My full research article examines the topic in four sections:

  1. The rise of private markets
Why private equity, private credit, infrastructure, real estate, and other alternative assets are attracting more capital, and the trade-offs involving liquidity, valuation, fees, and transparency.
  2. Institutional investors and private credit
How pension funds, insurers, endowments, family offices, and other institutions are using private assets, along with the opportunities and risks created by the rapid growth of direct lending.
  3. Competition, technology, and operating models
Why investment performance is no longer enough. Managers must also build strong capabilities in origination, distribution, data, valuation, reporting, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence.
  4. The future of asset management
What the expansion of private markets means for advisors, wealth platforms, regulators, asset managers, and individual investors, and why liquidity planning, transparency, suitability, and accountability matter more than ever.

Private markets are expanding, but the central question is not simply how much capital they attract. It is whether the industry can expand access while maintaining disciplined underwriting, credible valuation, realistic liquidity expectations, clear communication, and strong investor protection.

That was the focus of my presentation, and it remains one of the most important conversations in asset management today.
