The U.S. Labor Market Remains Resilient, but Affordability Challenges Are Growing

This morning’s U.S. jobs report delivered another upside surprise, with nonfarm payrolls rising by 172,000 in May and the unemployment rate holding steady at 4.3%. Average hourly earnings climbed 3.4% year-over-year, with wage growth of 0.3% just for the month. At first glance, these figures paint a picture of a labor market that’s still healthy and resilient.

But the story is more complicated beneath the surface. Most of the new jobs came from health care, leisure and hospitality, and local government, sectors that have been steady sources of employment even as other areas, like financial services, continue to lose ground. The contraction in financial activities reflects the lingering impact of higher borrowing costs and sluggish capital markets, a reminder that not all industries are sharing equally in this recovery.

For millions of Americans, though, the real challenge isn’t finding a job, it’s making ends meet. Wage gains, while positive, are only just outpacing inflation. When you factor in the jump in costs for gasoline, utilities, home insurance, groceries, and especially housing, the average paycheck doesn’t stretch as far as it used to. Geopolitical tensions and rising energy prices are only adding to the strain, complicating the inflation outlook for both families and businesses.

This puts the Federal Reserve in a tricky spot. The labor market doesn’t need a boost, if anything, it’s running hot enough to warrant continued caution. But with inflation still above target and wages failing to restore real purchasing power for many, the Fed may have to keep its policy stance restrictive for longer than markets expect. Some policymakers are even floating the idea of further tightening if inflation picks up again.

The labor market is not the problem. Affordability is. For most Americans, the real question isn’t whether they’re working, it’s whether their paychecks can keep up with the cost of living. For many, the answer remains uncertain.
